On the small pillar we will see a large Saint Christopher painted, carrying the Christ Child, with an open book in the centre bearing the words ‘Pax vobis’. This fresco dates back to the twelfth century, while the Holy Bishop next to the Madonna Lactans dates back to the mid-fourteenth century.
On the back wall, above the arch framing the staircase we used to enter, we can see a fresco from around 1150 depicting the Agnus Dei with the symbols of the Passion; on the left, Saint John the Baptist, then Christ, Mary and Saint Fermus; on the right, three angels and Saint Rusticus. It is time to leave this space so rich in history and peace and climb the stairs back up to the cloister, so that we can visit the upper church.
