Near the counter-façade stands one of Verona’s most striking and unique funerary monuments: the Brenzoni Mausoleum, completed in 1426. The sculptural part is attributed to Nanni di Bartolo, while the pictorial decoration is by Antonio Pisano, better known as Pisanello.

This elaborate type of tomb, surrounded by sculptures and frescoes, features a sarcophagus surmounted by a canopy which, thanks to the opening of a sculpted curtain by angels, creating a theatrical scene, as if unveiling a sacred mystery. At the top is a statue of the prophet Isaiah, who announced the arrival of the Messiah in the Old Testament; immediately below, in the centre of the marble complex, Christ towers over three sleeping soldiers. On the left, the solid, floating forms of the Archangel Gabriel, elegantly dressed, with flowing hair and reddened cheeks after a long flight, seems to be preparing to meet the Virgin Mary. Mary appears at the top right, inside an elegant Gothic room adorned with gold cushions, a rich carpet, and a tapestry showing scenes of courtly love, which are enriched by the presence of various animals, such as a peacock, doves and a small dog, highlighting the artist’s love for detail and nature. A trail of golden dots in a diagonal line connects the Madonna to the Baby Jesus. On either side of the canopy are also carved the Archangels Raphael and Michael.
